IM Nailing - Tibia and Fibula Fracture : 6 weeks post-operation

After my 2nd hospital appointment (6 weeks post operation), I was really eager to start moving around and hopefully start seeing a Physiotherapist. It was through online researches and blogs like Jake's where I got the idea that I should be starting my physio.

At my first follow-up checkup (2 weeks post operation), my doctor told me to move my ankle and knees just so it won't get too stiff. This is important. Try to do ankle and knee exercises as much as you can but make sure not to overdo it. Healing is far more important and it should be your priority.

I tried to put as much weight as I can on my bad leg from weeks 2 to 6, leading to the 2nd follow-up check-up. Remember to only do these when the doctor gave you clearance to bear weight as tolerated.By my 5th week, I was only using 1 crutch when walking.

TO AVOID DEVELOPING A LIMP:

When in 2 crutches: Walk as slowly as you can. Try to focus on your good leg when you walk. Your tendency is that you'll walk slowly on the bad leg then fast on the good leg. Try to walk at the same pace. Thus, your good leg should adjust its pace.

When in 1 crutch: Hold your crutch on the opposite side of your bad leg. I got injured on my left leg so I should be holding my crutch on my right side.

Fortunately for me, I did not develop a limp. I was really trying not to!

Anyway, during my 2nd follow-up check up the doctor told me that I was healing fine but that the bones are not completely healed. He suggested that I can now walk without the air boot. That scared me a bit. That boot gave me protection. I asked if I should start taking physiotherapy classes. He was reluctant at first because he didn't think it was necessary at that time. I had great ankle and knee mobility. In the end, he said it will be a good idea to keep me moving and get those muscles back. I was happy with the turnout of my hospital visit! I was really excited to start with the next phase of recovery! This phase has got to be one of the most exciting because I got to move around and do physica activities after a really long time.

NEXT: My Physiotherapy sessions

P.S. I will be adding photos on my next entry. Just for it to become a bit more interesting.
P.S.S. If you have any questions, feel free to ask! Will be happy to give you my insights!

IM Nailing : Tibia and Fibula Fracture

June 3, 2018. We were warming up for volleyball. Went on to spike some balls. On my
second attempt, I landed on someone else’s foot. My leg twisted and I heard a snap. In
that instance, I knew that I broke my left leg. I heard my bone snap. They called in the
ambulance. I was brought to the nearest hospital and was given morphine to manage
the pain. Pain was a bit too much for me that they had to give me more of morphine
and laughing gas in the emergency room. Honestly, I didn’t think it helped a lot.

Orthopaedic surgeon came to assess my leg and told me that I will need an operation
the next day. As I suspected. I was informed that a metal rod will be placed inside the
bone for fixation purposes. IM NAIL on the left tibia. That’s what is written on my
discharge papers. Operation went well. No complications or whatsoever. I was allowed
to bear weight on my bad leg 2 days after operation. That was a relief for me.
I had to wear the cam boots for protection.

FIRST WEEK. First week at home has got to be the hardest. Pain was not at all tolerable.
I couldn’t sleep well. Everytime I attempted to stand, blood seems to rush through my bad
leg followed by a burning sensation. I had to work from home. No. I wanted to work from home.
It was fine for my boss for me to take a leave but I refused. I wanted to be busy and not think
too much about the broken leg. I recommend icing the fractured area and elevating the leg
as much as possible to help with the swelling.

SECOND WEEK. I was feeling so much better. It still hurts when I walk on the bad leg but I still
try to walk on it when I have the chance. Doctor says it will encourage healing. Went to my first
post-operation hospital appointment and the doctor says I am healing well. I was told to do ankle
and knee exercises just so it won’t get too stiff. I almost forgot, my fibula was left to heal on its
own. I was quite worried because my fibula was not exactly aligned. My doctor said that it wasn’t
weight-bearing and it doesn’t really matter.

THIRD - FIFTH WEEK - Not much happened really. But I noticed that I am feeling less and less
pain as the weeks pass. Towards the fifth week, I can walk without the crutches but still with
the boots on. I go to work and outside the house with just one crutch.

SIXTH WEEK  - Time for my second post-operation check-up! I was looking forward to this
appointment. I wanted to get rid of the boots. I saw the X-ray and my fibula looked a lot better
now. Alignment, though not perfect, was a lot better and the bones seemed to have joined. My
tibia with the metal rod in it still has a gap but the doctor said that it was healing fine. I was
referred to a Physiotherapist. I started with my Physio to regain all the muscles that I have lost
along the way.

Sagada : A Place Close to Heaven

I went to Sagada last January of this year with my friends. We took a bus from Manila to Baguio which took 6 hours. From Baguio, we again took another bus to Sagada which took another 6 hours. That is half a day on the road! But upon reaching the place, it was all worth it. Here, I will be sharing you my experience as a backpacker in Sagada. I will be listing out the highlights of my trip and will not bore you with unnecessary details.

Hotels:
Just a tip. Make sure to book a hotel or a place to stay in Sagada prior to your trip. It took us hours to find a place that could accommodate us for our 3 days stay in the area. We ended up staying in one hotel for our first day and had to transfer to another place for the remaining days. The cost per person is around 300 - 400 which is quite reasonable.

Food:
This is my favorite part of my trips. Food! I did enjoy the food in Sagada. They are fresh and really healthy. If you are a fan of yoghurt, you will surely enjoy this place. Strawberry Cafe is where I have tasted the best strawberry yoghurt in my entire life. If I remembered it right, it only cost 60PhP per serving. I ordered their garden salad and fruit salad and they are the best. Be sure to try them when you get there! We also went to Yoghurt House to try their yoghurt (obviously). It was okay. A bit expensive. There was this lady who sells wheat bread along the streets, and they were delicious and affordable! Another must try food place in the area is the Sagada Lemon Pie House. I ordered a lemon pie and a mountain tea. If you could taste heaven, this probably what it would taste like. I love the food in Sagada all in all. There are a lot more food places in the area that you should try!

Hanging Coffins:
We just followed the tracks leading to the hanging coffins and decided not to hire a guide. Besides, the track is easy to follow and you won't be lost if you follow them closely. I think for those people who want to maximize their experience or learn the story behind these coffins, I encourage you to rent a guide.

Cave Connections:
This is the highlight of our trip! It was 4 hours spelunking inside Sumaguing and Lumiang Cave. This is an extreme activity and I would advise you to wear comfortable clothes. I suggest that you wear sandals instead of slippers as the trail may be too slippery. You will get wet for sure so wearing rubber shoes is not advisable. There is this " natural indoor pool" inside the cave where you can actually swim. Water is very cold but at the same time relaxing. All in all, the whole spelunking experience was challenging and at the same time really really fun! Did I mention about the magnificent rock formations inside the cave? Well, they are amazing. Reminded me of my trip to the Underground River in Palawan.

People:
People are very nice. They are accommodating and will really try to make you comfortable with your stay in Sagada. If there is one thing I wish I would have done is to interact more with the locals. I didn't have time to do so since we were all busy planning our day's itinerary.

There are a lot more things to do in Sagada like Sunrise watching in Kiltepan, Pottery, and enjoying the cool water of Bomod-Ok Falls. Best time to go in Sagada is during December to February.

P.S. They also have White Water Rafting in the area but unfortunately the current is not strong enough when we went there.

Heneral Luna : Heneral Artikulo Uno

I regularly watch movies in the cinema house. This is my way of showing appreciation to those people behind these quality movies for their hard work. Unfortunately, I have not watched any Filipino Movie for the past 10 years. Why? Because of bad experience. There was this Filipino movie ten years ago that made me leave the cinema house just 30 minutes into the movie. I will not mention the movie but a lot of my friends had the same thought as I had when it comes to local movies. I will be paying the same price for a local and foreign movie then might as well get my money's worth and watch these high-budgeted foreign movies. To be fair, there are a few great local movies like Magnifico, and Jose Rizal.

But one day, a lot of my friends had their status as to how great "Heneral Luna" movie is. I was excited. I have always loved Philippine History. I loved reading about the life of Jose Rizal and listening to debates on why Andres Bonifacio should be our National Hero and not Jose Rizal. I did enjoy watching Cesar Montano's Jose Rizal when I was a kid. Anyway, back to Heneral Luna, I decided to watch this movie with my friends.

Definitely, this is a movie that I will remember for the rest of my life. What I did not expect was the funny moments in the movie. One would expect it to be a serious movie because of the nature of the story. But hell was I wrong. There was this feeling of pride while I was watching this movie. It has been an eye opener for me.

Tama nga si Heneral Luna. Ang sarili natin ang pinaka matindi nating kalaban. Sana ay suportahan ng ating mga kababayan ang ganito pang mga pelikula. May aral. Higit sa lahat, may Puso.

AlDub: An Accidental Phenomenon

I remember it vividly. It was July 16, 2015. I was actually in Bulacan gathering data for my work. While waiting for the head engineer in his office, their television was luckily tuned in to Eat Bulaga. It was my first time in ages to watch the show again because of work. Don't get me wrong, I grew up watching Eat Bulaga but because of work watching television has been a luxury. Anyway, the first time I saw Yaya Dub, napaisip ako ng

" She's cute even though she's making these weird faces."

It was her simplicity that captured my attention. She was doing dubsmashes the entire show. I wonder how hard it was to control yourself not to speak specially with Jose, Wally and Paolo throwing these funny jokes. I knew that she was special that first time I saw her. There was this undeniable chemistry between her and Alden Richards even in split screens. Time proved that she was indeed special.

Fast forward to September, a lot has happened in this Eat Bulaga's "Kalyeserye". It has been my stress reliever after hours of work. I thank everyone behind this show as it brings back the values we Filipinos once had.

P.S.: I am not a good writer (Obviously.)
